Athletes and people who work on their feet may be familiar with a condition known as plantar fasciitis, which is characterized by inflamed connective tissue on the bottom of the foot.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), this occurs most often in people with flat feet, high arches, runners and those who wear shoes with poor arch support, as well as individuals who are overweight or have suddenly gained weight.
An article on WLS-TC, the ABC Chicago affiliate, reports that about 2 million people in the U.S. have fallen arches. Additionally, the news source recommended stretching and balance exercises to help improve gait and strengthen the foot.
In order to help correct plantar fasciitis, experts told WLS-TV that individuals should try over-the-counter orthotics before resorting to expensive, custom-made insoles, which may not have benefits over less pricey brands.
