October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which means that people around the country are preparing for 5K walks in an effort to raise money to find a cure for the devastating illness.
Ladies with bunions should not fear their bony deformities getting in the way of completing the long walks, as there are a number of non-invasive options to relieve bunion pain and help correct the condition.
Wearing bunion splints or orthotics in the days leading up to a walk may help correct landing mechanics as well as improve the function in the metatarsophalangeal joint located at the base of the big toe. Users should continue wearing the devices after any events as well.
On the day of the walk, it may help to pad bunions with moleskin or bandages. This may help prevent excessive rubbing on the inside of the shoe, which is known to cause calluses or even bursitis.
Additionally, seek out an appropriate pair of shoes for walking. They should have a wide toe box, preferably with mesh on the inner edge of the toe area, and good arch support.
